Not much hand-holding, but a good value for e-filing By Michael A. Rouse
I'm going to flip this review around, and give my conclusion first.
I am glad I bought this package, and I will look for it again next year. It did what I wanted, and while it didn't give detailed instructions on how to reduce taxes that other tax packages do, it provided every form that you can imagine, and -- nearly as important -- included federal AND state e-file in the package.
If you need software that will let you know to increase your IRA contribution to lower your tax -- as an example -- you will probably want to look elsewhere. If you just need a package that helps make certain that the form you send to state and federal governments is complete and accurate, and you want to do it online, this is a good, basic program.
Now to a review of the package. The CD appeared to be a burned copy with a Liquid Tax label put on it, but the entire package consisted of two links to the On-Line Taxes, Inc. website (www.olt.com), so that wasn't a big deal. One link was to create a new account, while the other was to go in to an existing account. I used both, and they worked well, but I was wondering why they didn't just offer the option to email the links, which would not only be quicker, but save them the cost of the CD and shipping. There was also an activation code on a card, one of those with a silvery coating you scratch off. It kind of looked like a card that you would hang on a rack in a store, where you would take it up to the front counter and activate it. Though it was different from a shrink-wrapped product, it worked well.
Using the product was straightforward for the most part. It handled employment income, interest income, retirement contributions (403(b) and IRA), and HSA contributions. The only problem I had was finding the right form for my IRA (I was sent a form 5498 from my bank), but I was able to figure it out in a few minutes. There were literally dozens of other forms available, but I don't have railroad investment income or wages from a foreign country (and other esoteric things), so I didn't open those up. The e-file for both state and federal forms worked perfectly, and the package imported almost all the information needed from my federal form to my state form, making it a lot easier.
The best part of the entire package was the direct deposit of my refund from the state and federal government this past week!
Pros: Price, every tax form you can imagine, fairly easy to use, e-file included.
Cons: Not much hand-holding on areas you can reduce taxes in. The Best-Selling Liquid Tax 2010 Federal, State and E-file (All in One) then to sell out very fast, if this is a must have product, be sure to order now to avoid disappointment.
